I got a ticket riding my bicycle… What are my options?
You have a choice….
A. Plead guilty, pay the fine & court costs, or
B. Plead not guilty, post bail and set a trial date, or
C. Complete an approved Bicycle Safety Class.
If you choose Option C and complete the bicycle safety class within the court approved time, the court will dismiss your case. This program is only available for traffic tickets issued with the jurisdiction of the Torrance Traffic Court.
The bicycling traffic school fee is $50. You have 90 days from the day of your court visit to complete the bicycle safety class and present a class completion certificate to the Traffic Clerk at the Court.
To register for a class, click on the “Register for a Class” button , then select a class from the calendar, enter your name, e-mail address, telephone number, citation number and choose an option for paying the $50 fee.
Class size is limited; each event will show how many spaces are available.
Payment method is by PayPal or credit card upon registration, or by cash at the time of the class.
When you register for a class you will receive an e-mail with a website password. Use your e-mail address & this password to login to this website if you need to make changes to your registration.
Once the class has been completed, attendees will receive a completion certificate that they must present to the Traffic Clerk at the Court for the ticket to be dismissed. Presentation of the completion certificate to the court must be at the 8:00 a.m. court “walk in” time, within the 90 day window.
People who register for a class but do not show up will be given the opportunity to reschedule, if within the 90 day window.
Violators who do not complete the course within the 90 day window will have to either pay the full fine or attend the court appearance.
The class will last approximately 3 hours and will cover the following topics:
- Causes of bicycle crashes
- How to protect yourself when riding a bicycle
- A well-maintained bicycle
- Safe riding behavior
- Cyclist’s responsibilities
- Motorist’s responsibilities
- Passive protection
- Law & resources
